Nutritional and Environmental Medicine

What is Nutritional and Environmental Medicine?

Nutritional and Environmental Medicine is concerned with the interaction of nutritional and environmental factors with human biochemistry and physiology, and the resulting physiological and psychological symptoms and pathology. It is evidence-based, drawing on the latest biomedical and genetic science and research to develop new treatment approaches to illness and disease, for primary prevention and to promote optimal health and wellbeing.

Nutritional deficiencies, imbalances, or the presence of environmental toxins in the body can result in cellular dysfunction, illness or disease. Treatment is aimed at correcting underlying causes as well as providing symptomatic relief. This may involve removal of certain foods from the diet or toxins from the patient’s environment, or prescription of supplements such as vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essential fatty acids where diet and lifestyle alone cannot rectify physiological imbalances.

Clinical and biochemical laboratory services are based on the simple understanding that if the body does not have the appropriate amounts of the basic building blocks (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids etc.) necessary for optimum function, that body will not be as healthy as it could be.

The genes of homo sapiens evolved over millions of years in environments very different from those we encounter in present day industrialised society, looking at those areas of today’s environment that differ from what we know of pre-industrial, pre-agricultural environments leads to immense diagnostic and therapeutic potential.

An important fundamental aspect of this approach is an awareness of the importance of the protective effects of nutrients against toxic substances, and that adequacy of nutrients is absolutely vital for accurate gene expression.

How is it done?

We use a medical referral laboratory based in London who specialise in nutritional and environmental medicine and provide a wide range of tests that enable us to obtain a picture of patients’ nutritional, toxic and functional status, thereby providing the necessary information to help patients to overcome conditions which have not previously yielded to pharmaceutically oriented interventions.  They also have an extensive range of profiles for assessing the effects of twenty-first century lifestyles on our bodies.

The laboratory is staffed by a highly experienced and qualified team who have undertaken extensive research into this field of medicine.  They have a dedication to analytical excellence combined with an intrinsic awareness of the importance of holding the best interest of the patients’ well-being as the most important consideration at all times.

Tests Available Include:

Adrenal Stress Antioxident Profile

Candida Profile

Comparative Stool Analysis

Fat Soluble and Water Soluble Vitamins

Gut Permeability Profile

Gut Fermentation

Mineral Status

Trace and Toxic Elements

'The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.'

Thomas Edison
